Moth Damage

Almost half the repairs I do are related to moth damage! Do put moth killer tabs inside your piano, making sure they don’t foul any moving parts. Prevention is much cheaper than replacing all your felts.

humidity

Humidity

The extremes of humidity are 45% to 70% but keeping it constant at around 55% to 60% is ideal.
High humidity can make hinge points stiff and slow the action, eventually notes stop working altogether. White mould grows on wooden parts inside your piano, this can be an indicator that the humidity has been over 70% for a period of time.
Low Humidity can make wood shrink and split, & screws holding the action parts may loosen.

Temperature

If you are happy with the temperature in a room, so is your piano. Pianos do not like outbuildings, conservatories or periods in storage. If your piano is kept somewhere that is only heated occasionally, like a church, then consider fitting a ‘Dampp-chaser’.
