Services

If you would like to discuss any of the services I offer below, please get in touch. I am always happy to explain my techniques and to answer any questions you may have.

1
tuning

Tuning

I use traditional methods and tools to tune pianos by ear. I tune in equal temperament to A440 although sometimes, due to the age of the strings, it is necessary to tune to its existing pitch. Usually I recommend tuning every six months to maintain stability.

There are occasions when more frequent tuning may be necessary, for example, after a move, before a performance or if your piano has not been tuned for many years when it may require a couple of tunings before it stabilises.

My standard fee for tuning is £75.
2
repairs

Repairs

Whether your piano is suffering from a sticking key or a broken hammer, most repairs can be done on site.

I have access to a fully equipped workshop to deal with more complicated repairs. Price for repairs: £60 per hour, plus materials. For work that will take longer than an hour I will provide a quote.
3
restoration

Restoration

I take pride in being a specialist in sympathetic restoration, repairing existing parts whenever possible in order to maintain the character of your instrument. I replace what is past repair. After an initial examination I will explain the work I recommend and provide a detailed written quote.

Each piano is unique and needs an individual approach and the quote will be produced based on your requirements.
4
regulation

Regulation

Years of playing can compact felt and leather, leaving your piano tired and not playing as it should. Regulating is mathematics and geometry, adjusting each part to make the whole mechanism function with precision and accuracy which is vital for expression, especially when trying to play softly. This can involve over seven hundred separate adjustments.
5
valeting

Interior valeting

Have you ever wondered how you are going to get rid of those unsightly decades of dust from under the strings of your grand piano, not to mention that accident with the glass of red wine? You will be amazed by the results of a few hours’ work. The dirtier it is, the more noticeable the results!

My standard fee for this service is £150.

To discuss your requirements

I inherited a pre-war Ibach which was verging on scrap. Several piano restorers suggested costly overhaul plans that made no economic sense. Stephen tuned it for me and during his visit offered real guidance on how best to bring it back to life in a measured and remarkably cost effective way. The restoration work he undertook has delivered an astounding result. I am delighted by the finished piano which looks and plays beautifully, while retaining all the authenticity of its 96 years. I would recommend Stephen without any hesitation for comparable restoration projects.
